Nokia seems to be increasing its presence in Indian touch screen mobiles market. There buzz is that the company is going to release four-five such mobile phones in the country this year. The launch of Nokia 6208 Classic seems to be one more step in the direction after Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

The touchscreen cellphone was released in China some times ago. 6208 Classic has got a 2.4-inch QVGA display with resolution of 320 x 240 pixels capable of displaying up to 16.7 million colours, multimedia player, FM Radio, handwriting recognition support and a 5-way navi-key. The handset also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 8x digital zoom. The phone comes with 64MB of internal memory, which can of course be expanded upto 8GB with microSD cards. There is a 3.5mm jack for earphones. Strangely enough, Wi-Fi or 3G support is missing although EDGE is there.

The one thing that sets Nokia 6208 Classic apart from other phones in the category is that the device is based on S40 platform. The phone will be priced at Rs. 13,259 in India.

Beside trying to cash on the current popularity of these devices, the Finnish cellphone maker is aiming to generate revenue from applications specific to these devices. It is note worthy that recently the company launched its much hyped Ovi app store in some countries and intends to expand these online stores to further countries too. What is more Nokia is planning to release sub 10K touch screen models soon.

Samsung Launches 3 Touch Screen Mobiles Star, Star3G And Beat DJ In India

Samsung India has launched three touchscreen cell phones in the country. Samsung Star, Star 3G and Beat DJ are now a part of an array of 7 touch screen phones offered by the company in Indian market. Let us look at the features of each phone in detail.

Samsung Star (S5233) is a 11.9 mm compact phone sporting a 7.63 cm WQVGA full-touch screen. There is a feature called Photo Contact using which one can call a contact by simply touching an image. A stylus is added too. The phone has an impressive 3.2 mega-pixel feature-rich camera with smile recognition. Gesture Control is another feature that the company has started to equip its latest cellphones with. Using Gesture Control one can unlock the Touch Screen or run an application by giving a gesture command.

This phone supports 50MB internal memory which is expandable up to 8GB through memory card. Samsung’s TouchWiz User Interface is another feather in its cap. The phone has music recognition capability utilizing Shazam’s "Find Music" service. There is virtual QWERTY keyboard for messaging and handwriting features. All these features come at an affordable price tag of 11,100/-.

Samsung Star 3G also shares some nifty features of Star S5233 like Gesture control and camera. On internal memory front, this phone has slightly more (80 MB) of internal memory that is again expandable to 8 GB. This device offers full Internet browsing support with an accelerometer sensor for auto-rotation. The phone is 3G compatible. This handset is priced at slightly higher at Rs. 14,499/-.

Samsung BEAT DJ handset to comes with touch screen and sports intuitive and easy to use DISC User Interface. The cell phone has 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen display (240 x 400 pixels with 16 million colors). Beat DJ has 50MB internal memory expandable up to up to 16GB. This 3G compatible handset is priced at Rs 18,990/-.

Samsung is eying the big and growing touch screen mobiles market both in high-end and mid size segments. That is why over the past few months the company has released a wide array of cellphones in different markets including Asia, Europe and Latin America. So far as India is concerned, Samsung seems to be in a mood to invest heavily in the country. Economic Times reports that in this calendar the company plans to invest a whopping $5 million at its manufacturing facility in the country. Moreover, Samsung has plans to launch 2 dozen new models in early 2009 and has made it clear that it is taking up 3G and touch screen segment in a big way.

Microsoft Pink Touch Screen Cellphone Will Compete With iPhone ?

Microsoft the software giant is coming up with a touch screen phone Ppink modeled after its music player Zune just like iPhone was crafted on the lines of iPod. After the wild success of iPhone, many companies have tried and still trying to come up with a touch screen phone that could rival iPhone. Some notable products are HTC Pro, Nokia N96, Blackberry Storm and many more. Some of the cellphones have features that even surpass those in iPhone.

Microsoft Pink project mat well be an attempt in that direction. Although Zune comes nowhere near iPod in terms of sales and popularity, nobody can say for sure how things will turn out when this new touch screen mobile phone is launched early next year (2010).

The company is reportedly in talks with Verizon wireless for the purpose. With Pink Microsoft aims to extend its Windows Mobile operating system by adding new software capabilities. WSJ.com reports that Microsoft may come up with Windows Marketplace for Mobile, an online store for mobile downloads, to rival Apple's App Store. There are also reports that the company will only be involved in design of the device and manufacturing will be in hands of a third party.

Since not many details are available yet, it remains to be seen how Microsoft Pink mobile will be able to compete with the product that has a cult following.

Samsung in past has come up with some touchscreen models like S8300 UltraTouch, Sch-W740 Haptic and Pixon M8800 . But it seems like the company sees a huge market for these devices and thus is releasing ever new models. Latest offering by Samsung has two touchscreen phones, Star S5230 and Preston S5600.

Star S5230 and Preston S5600 share some similarities in terms of features like both mobile phones have Samsung’s TouchWiz GUI, accelerometer to flip between portrait and landscape orientations, 3.2 megapixel camera and PMP functionality. But both phone have some unique features of their own so that they are appealing to different customers in global markets.

JK Shin, executive vice president and head of Mobile Communications division at Samsung Electronics says, "Samsung Star and Samsung Preston are significant additions to our full-touch screen mobile portfolio, featuring all the essential functions in one single device."

Samsung Star S5230 supports 2.5G networks. This cellphone boasts of a 3-inch WQVGA display and measures 11.9mm in thickness. The phone has internal storage of 50Mb expandable to 8GB via a memory card slot. Moreover the phone had on-screen QWERTY keyboard. The phone had capability to recognize handwriting. The “Photo Contact” option allows users to call a contact by simply touching an appointed image. The mobile phone comes Soft pink, Snow white and more colors. Company has launched Star S5230 in Europe, Middle East Africa, South East Asia, South West Asia and Latin America. This phone was released in UK with the name of Tocco Lite.

Samsung Preston S5600 supports 3G networks and has 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity. The cellphone comes with 80MB of standard memory expandable to 8GB through memory card. This device has 2.8 inch QVGA screen. Samsung Preston is available in Sweet pink, Snow white, and Charcoal Grey colors. The phone is available in Europe and Asia.

There is no word on pricing yet but the popularity can be gauged by the fact that Samsung has already pre-orders for two million handsets.

Nokia is all set to release its wildly popular XpressMusic mobile phone Star Trek edition. The phone will have all of the features of the original cellphone plus it will have some custom items that make it irresistible for Star Trak fans.

Nokia XpressMusic Star Trek edition will come with four screensavers, three wallpapers and eight brand new ringtones. What is more, the cellphone will also integrate a Phaser application. The users can choose from blue, red, and black/silver color handsets.

The mobile phone will be exclusively available at Phones 4U from 1 May 2009. The device will also be available through Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and Orange with the equivalent of a $32.87/month contract.
